The purpose of risk assessments and handling plans used to identify potential risks, determine the safest and most proportionate way to support an individual, and provide clear guidance to ensure handling is carried out safely, consistently and in a person-centred manner.

Practical skills to support individuals safely, effectively and with confidence, including the safe use of a variety of equipment, such as standing aids and other assistive devices, bed management systems and techniques that promote comfort, dignity and independence.

Outline how using a safer proportionate people handling approach promotes the health, wellbeing and enablement of the person being supported
Describe key health and safety legislation relevant to safer proportionate people handling, including employer and employee duties
Describe the purpose of the risk assessment and the handling plan for safer proportionate people handling
Identify the factors that increase the risk of back injury during people handling activities
State three indicators that proportionate people handling (one handler) is no longer suitable for a person.

Equipment and safety checks

Outline safe storage, maintenance and reporting requirements for moving and handling equipment
Demonstrate pre-use checks of mechanical equipment and slings, in accordance with manufacturer's instructions for:
- Powered and non-powered standing aids
- Passive hoists
- Slings.

Assessment before moving and handling

Demonstrate a pre-transfer assessment before undertaking proportionate people handling, including:
- Load/person
- Individual
- Task
- Environment
- Equipment
- Other factors.

Practical people handling skills

Demonstrate the application of efficient movement principles and safer proportionate people handling practice when:
- Assisting a person in bed
- Carrying out hoist transfers
- Assisting a weight-bearing person, to include:
  - Functional ability check
  - Sit to stand (with and without equipment)
  - Walking (with and without aids).
