Take Action Today - UK

Reducing accidental poisoning nationwide

Take Action Today, Put Them Away is a national home safety programme from RoSPA and the United Kingdom Cleaning Products Industry Association (UKCPI), designed to reduce emergency hospital admissions for children aged 0-4 caused by accidental poisoning from household chemicals.

The programme works by equipping local authority practitioners – who already carry out trusted home visits - with the training and resources they need to help families make safer choices.

The Take Action Today, put them away programme has been successfully implemented in over 120 areas across the UK, including Birmingham, Liverpool, Coventry, and Nottingham.

RoSPA’s research has shown a measurable reduction in hospital admissions due to accidental poisoning, alongside a significant increase in awareness among families about the risks posed to children under five in areas where the programme is implemented.

How does it work?

Delivered through local authorities

Take Action Today is embedded into existing home visit programmes run by local authorities. These visits are carried out by trusted practitioners who are well placed to influence parental behaviour and promote safer homes.

Supporting resources

To support the campaign, a range of tools are provided:

  • Briefing packs for professionals working with families.
  • Factsheets offering detailed guidance.
  • Safety checklists for parents to assess risks in their homes.

Practitioner training

RoSPA provides fully funded specialist home safety training to local authority practitioners working in Take Action Today areas, ensuring they have the knowledge and confidence to deliver accurate, impactful safety advice to families.
